Quick Summary: SkillsDB organizes its pages into a left sidebar with Search, Inbox, and four sections — Profile, Team, Company, and Library. Every page has an Actions menu for that page’s commands, and the ⌘K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) command menu lets you jump to any page or run any action by typing.

Overview

This page explains how to move around SkillsDB and how to work faster once you know where things are. It covers the left sidebar and who sees each part of it, the Actions menu that holds each page’s commands (such as Export), the command menu you open with ⌘K or Ctrl+K, the Find in view field for filtering a table, the Help menu, and the keyboard shortcuts SkillsDB supports. What you see in the sidebar depends on your role and on your organization’s settings. Employees see their own Profile pages. Managers and other leaders also see Team pages for the people they oversee. Administrators also see Company pages for configuring SkillsDB. The Library section holds the organization’s shared catalogs — careers, certifications, skills, training, and more — and each library can be shown or hidden by an administrator. Commands that act on the page you are viewing live in one place: the page’s Actions menu. For example, exporting a table, adding a new record, or deleting the rows you selected all happen from Actions. The same commands are also available by typing in the command menu, so keyboard users never need to reach for the mouse.
Tip: In this documentation, a path such as Team > Skills means: select Skills under the Team section of the left sidebar.

Understanding the Sidebar

The left sidebar starts with two items that are not part of any section, followed by the four sections. Some items appear only when your organization uses the matching feature. For example, Surveys, Journeys, Import, Checklists, and Documents appear only where those features are available. A section disappears entirely when none of its items applies to you. People who can see promotions but cannot open Team > People — for example, an employee who approves promotion steps — see a separate Team > Promotions item. Everyone else reaches promotions from the view menu on Team > People. Administrators control which Profile, Team, and Library items appear for everyone from Company > Settings. To learn how, see Page Settings. The sidebar also lists your Favorites — pages you have starred so you can return to them in one click. To learn how to add and manage favorites, see Favorites.

Using the Actions Menu

Every page has one Actions button. It lists the commands that apply to the page you are viewing, grouped under headings such as Add New, Go to, Data, and Selection.
1

Open the menu

Select Actions on the page.
2

Choose a command

Select a command, such as Export under Data or Document under Add New.
3

Reach more commands

Select More Actions… at the bottom of the menu to open the full command menu.
The Actions menu shows only the commands you are allowed to run. Commands that act on selected rows — such as Delete — appear only after you select rows in the table. When you select rows, a selection bar also appears with the same commands. The command menu (below) lists the same commands. In the command menu, a command you cannot run is shown as unavailable with a short reason, so you can see why it is not offered — for example, “Requires administrator access.”

Using the Command Menu

The command menu lets you go anywhere and do anything by typing. Press ⌘K on a Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows to open it from any page, and press the same keys again to close it.
1

Open the command menu

Press ⌘K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows).
2

Type what you want

Type a page name, such as team skills, or an action, such as export. The list narrows as you type.
3

Select a result

Use the arrow keys to highlight a result and press Enter, or select it with the mouse.
The command menu groups its results:
  • Go to — Search, Inbox, and every sidebar item you can see, listed under its section name (Profile, Team, Company, Library). Typing a section name, such as team, finds that section’s pages.
  • Search — Type a query and select Search for ”…” to run it on the Search page, or select Open search.
  • Page views — The other views of the page you are on, such as a career’s Overview or Settings.
  • The page’s own actions — The same commands as the page’s Actions menu.
  • Help — Getting started reopens the welcome guide. Administrators to whom tips apply also see Turn off tips or Turn on tips. When you turn tips off, SkillsDB confirms with “Tips are off. Turn them back on from ⌘K.”
Some results open a preview pane. Press → or Tab to open the preview of the highlighted result, and ← or Shift+Tab to close it.

Finding Rows in a Table

Find in view filters the table on the current page as you type, without changing your saved filters.
  1. Press ⌘F (Mac) or Ctrl+F (Windows), or select Find in view… from the page’s Actions menu
  2. Type the text you are looking for. The table shows only matching rows.
  3. Press Esc to clear the find and close the field
On pages with a filter row, Find in view appears as a magnifying glass at the end of the filter row. Pressing ⌘F or Ctrl+F again while the field is focused hands over to your browser’s own find. On a page without a searchable table, ⌘F and Ctrl+F open your browser’s find as usual.

Using the Help Menu

The Help button at the bottom of the left sidebar opens a menu of help resources:
  • Docs — Opens this help center in a new tab
  • Report issue — Opens a form to report a problem to SkillsDB
  • Keyboard shortcuts — Opens the keyboard shortcuts list
  • SkillsDB status — Opens the SkillsDB service status page in a new tab
  • What’s new — Recent product updates
Some organizations also see an Onboarding checklist item while they are getting started.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Press ? or ⌘/ (Mac) or Ctrl+/ (Windows) on any page to open the Keyboard shortcuts list. You can also open it from the Help menu. Global shortcuts are ignored while you are typing in a field or while a dialog or menu is open. Available on every page When you press D, a message names the new setting, such as “Theme: Dark”. This helps when you switch to System and nothing changes on screen because your device already uses that theme. Inside the command menu Team > Skills (grading mode) Taking a self-assessment Batch grading for manager assessments has its own shortcuts, listed in the keyboard shortcuts list and described in Manager Assessments.

Common Questions

The Team section appears for managers and higher roles, and Team > Training also appears for subject matter experts. The Company section appears for administrators only. If you expect to see a section, ask your administrator to check your access level and your organization’s page settings.
Export is a command in each page’s Actions menu, under Export or, on library pages, under Data. You can also press ⌘K or Ctrl+K and type export. If Export is missing, your role may not be allowed to export that page’s data.
Yes. Wherever this page shows ⌘, use Ctrl on Windows. The keyboard shortcuts list inside SkillsDB shows the correct key for your computer.
D is the shortcut that switches the theme between Light, Dark, and System. It does not fire while you are typing in a field. Press D again until the message shows the theme you want.
Yes, if you are an administrator. Use the Hide Profile & Team Sections and Hide Library Sections settings under Company > Settings. See Page Settings for the steps.
