# Responding to Surveys

> Learn how to find, complete, and submit surveys assigned to you in SkillsDB, including navigating questions, answering different question types, and viewing your completed responses.

<Info>
  **Quick Summary:** Surveys are questionnaires assigned to you by your manager or administrator. This article explains how to find, complete, and submit surveys in SkillsDB.
</Info>

# Overview

Surveys in SkillsDB are structured questionnaires that your organization uses to gather information about skills, development needs, certifications, and other workplace topics. When a manager or administrator creates a survey and assigns it to you, it appears in your personal survey list for you to complete.

Surveys can contain a variety of question types — from simple yes/no questions to rating scales, open-ended text responses, and file uploads. Some questions are required and must be answered before you can submit the survey. Others are optional and can be skipped.

Your responses are saved automatically as you move between questions, so you can pause and return to a survey at any time without losing your progress. Once you submit a survey, you can view your responses but cannot edit them.

## Prerequisites

Before responding to a survey, you need:

* **Access requirement**: A SkillsDB user account
* **Setup requirement**: At least one survey assigned to you by a manager or administrator

Standard users cannot create or assign surveys. Surveys are created and assigned by managers and administrators only.

# Understanding Your Surveys

Select **Surveys** from the left sidebar to open the **My Surveys** page. This page displays all surveys that have been assigned to you.

At the top of the page, status filter chips let you quickly filter your surveys:

* **All** — shows every survey assigned to you
* **Not Started** — surveys you have not yet opened
* **In Progress** — surveys you have started but not submitted
* **Completed** — surveys you have submitted
* **Past Due** — surveys whose due date has passed without submission

Each survey in the list shows the following information:

| Column              | Description                                                        |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Survey Name** | The title of the survey |
| **Status** | Your current progress on the survey (see status definitions below) |
| **Due Date** | The date by which the survey should be completed |
| **Completion Date** | The date you submitted your responses (populated after submission) |

## How to Respond to a Survey

**Step 1: Open the survey**

1. Select **Surveys** from the left sidebar
2. Locate the survey you want to complete in the **My Surveys** list
3. Select the action button to open the survey:
   * **Start** — appears when the survey status is **Not Started**
   * **Continue** — appears when the survey status is **In Progress**

The survey opens and displays the first unanswered question. The top of the screen shows the survey name, your current progress as a percentage, and your position in the survey (for example, "Question 1 of 8").

**Step 2: Navigate through questions**

Use the following controls to move through the survey:

* Select **Next** to save your current response and advance to the next question
* Select **Previous** to return to the previous question
* Select any question in the **table of contents** on the left side of the screen to jump directly to that question

<Info>
  **Note:** Your response is automatically saved each time you select **Next** or navigate to a different question. If you close the survey and return later, your answers will be preserved.
</Info>

The footer displays progress dots and an answer count (for example, "Questions answered: 3 of 8"). Each dot represents a question:

* **Green dot** — question answered
* **Blue dot** — current question
* **Gray dot** — question not yet answered

**Step 3: Answer each question**

Answer each question using the input method provided. The question type is indicated by a badge on each question. Required questions are marked with a **Required** badge and must be answered before you can submit the survey. Optional questions can be left blank.

The following question types may appear in a survey:

| Question type | How to answer |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Multiple Choice** | Select one or more checkboxes or radio buttons |
| **Yes / No** | Select **Yes** or **No** |

| **Dropdown** | Select one or more options from the dropdown menu |
| **Short Text** | Type a brief response in the text field |
| **Long Text** | Type a detailed response in the text area |
| **Document Upload** | Upload one or more files (see file requirements below) |
| **Certification Update** | Review and confirm or update your certification details |

<Info>
  **Note:** Rating scales and other configurable question types may use different ranges depending on how your administrator has set up the survey.
</Info>

**File upload requirements:**

* Accepted formats: `.jpg`, `.png`, `.pdf`, `.docx`, `.xlsx`, `.txt`, `.csv`
* Maximum file size: 10 MB per file
* Maximum number of files: 5 per upload question

**Step 4: Review and submit**

After answering the last question and selecting **Next**, the **completion screen** appears. This screen shows a summary of your survey, including how many questions you have answered and a list of any unanswered questions.

From the completion screen, you can:

* Select **Go Back to Edit** to return to the survey and change any responses
* Select **Complete Survey** to submit your responses

<Warning>
  **Important:** The **Complete Survey** button is disabled if any required questions remain unanswered. Select any unanswered required question listed on the completion screen to answer it before submitting.
</Warning>

When you select **Complete Survey**, SkillsDB saves and submits all of your responses. A confirmation message appears and you are returned to the **My Surveys** page. The survey status updates to **Completed**.
