# Connecting Your AI Assistant

> Connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Microsoft Copilot to your SkillsDB data with the SkillsDB server address, approve its access, and disconnect it at any time.

<Info>
  **Quick Summary:** Add SkillsDB to your own AI assistant by pasting the SkillsDB server address, `https://prod.skillsdbnext.com/mcp`, into the assistant's connector settings, then signing in to SkillsDB and approving the access. Manage and disconnect your assistants at [app.skillsdb.com/settings/ai-assistant](https://app.skillsdb.com/settings/ai-assistant).
</Info>

## Overview

You can connect your own AI assistant — Claude, ChatGPT, or Microsoft Copilot — to your SkillsDB data. Once connected, you can ask the assistant about your skills, careers, learning, and certifications, and, if your organization allows it, ask it to make changes for you, such as adding learning or recording a self-assessment.

Your assistant only ever sees what you can see when you sign in to SkillsDB. Every change it makes runs through the same permissions and approval steps as the same action taken by hand, and is recorded under your name. You can disconnect it at any time, and it stops working straight away.

Nothing is installed on your computer. The assistant connects to SkillsDB over the internet using one address, the same for everyone:

```text theme={null}
https://prod.skillsdbnext.com/mcp
```

## Prerequisites

Before you connect an assistant, you need:

* **Permission level**: Any SkillsDB role — basic users, managers, and administrators can all connect their own assistant
* **Setup requirement**: An administrator must turn on **AI Assistant Connections** for your company (see [AI Assistant Connections](/configurations/ai-assistant))
* **Access requirement**: An account in Claude, ChatGPT, or Microsoft Copilot that can add custom connectors

## Opening your AI Assistants page

The **AI Assistants** page shows the server address, setup steps for each assistant, and the assistants you have connected. Nothing in the SkillsDB menus links to it yet, so open it by its address:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the page">
    Go to [app.skillsdb.com/settings/ai-assistant](https://app.skillsdb.com/settings/ai-assistant) in your browser, signing in to SkillsDB if prompted.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the address">
    Under **Connect your AI assistant**, select the tab for your assistant — **Claude**, **ChatGPT**, or **Microsoft Copilot**. The server address appears below the steps. Select **Copy address** to copy it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the page says "Your organisation has not turned this on yet", an administrator has not enabled AI assistant connections for your company. Ask your SkillsDB administrator to turn on **AI Assistant Connections**. If the page is not found at all, the AI Assistant feature is not enabled for your SkillsDB account.

## Connecting your assistant

Each assistant adds SkillsDB slightly differently. Follow the steps for yours.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Claude">
    1. Open Claude and go to **Settings**, then **Connectors**.
    2. Choose **Add custom connector**.
    3. Paste the SkillsDB address, `https://prod.skillsdbnext.com/mcp`, and save.
    4. Claude opens a SkillsDB sign-in page — approve the access it asks for.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="ChatGPT">
    1. Open ChatGPT and go to **Settings**, then **Connectors**.
    2. Choose to add a connector and paste the SkillsDB address, `https://prod.skillsdbnext.com/mcp`.
    3. Sign in to SkillsDB when prompted and approve the access.
    4. ChatGPT asks you to confirm each change before it makes one.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Microsoft Copilot">
    1. Copilot connections are set up by your IT team in Copilot Studio.
    2. Send them the SkillsDB address, `https://prod.skillsdbnext.com/mcp`.
    3. Once they have added it, sign in to SkillsDB when Copilot prompts you.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

### Approving the access

When you sign in, SkillsDB shows **Connect \[assistant name] to SkillsDB?** and lists what the assistant will be able to do:

| Access | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Read your skills, careers, learning and certifications** | Always included. |
| **Make changes on your behalf** | Shown only when your organization allows assistants to make changes and the assistant asks to. Ticked by default — untick it to connect for reading only. |

Select **Connect** to finish, or **Cancel** to connect nothing. If your assistant asks to make changes but your organization does not allow it, SkillsDB says so and connects it for reading only.

## Managing your connected assistants

The **Connected assistants** section of your [AI Assistants page](https://app.skillsdb.com/settings/ai-assistant) lists every assistant you have connected. Each one shows the assistant's name, whether it **Can read your data** or **Can read your data and make changes**, and when it was last used.

To disconnect an assistant, select **Disconnect** on its row. The assistant stops working straight away. You can connect it again at any time by repeating the steps above.

If nothing is connected yet, the section says "Nothing connected yet. Follow the steps above to add SkillsDB to your assistant."

## Common Questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can my assistant see more than I can in SkillsDB?">
    No. Your assistant only ever sees what you can see when you sign in to SkillsDB, and can only do what you could do yourself. A manager's assistant can see their team the way the manager can; a basic user's assistant sees only that user's own data.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why can my assistant only read, not make changes?">
    Either your organization does not allow assistants to make changes, or you connected while changes were not allowed or with **Make changes on your behalf** unticked. A connection keeps the access it was approved with. If your organization now allows changes, select **Disconnect**, connect again, and leave **Make changes on your behalf** ticked.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need to install anything?">
    No. SkillsDB connects to your assistant over the internet. You only paste the address `https://prod.skillsdbnext.com/mcp` into your assistant's connector settings and sign in to SkillsDB.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My assistant stopped working. What happened?">
    Your connection may have been disconnected, or an administrator may have revoked it or turned off AI assistant connections for your company. Open your [AI Assistants page](https://app.skillsdb.com/settings/ai-assistant): if your assistant is no longer listed as connected, connect it again. If the page says "Your organisation has not turned this on yet", ask your administrator.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will my colleagues see that a change came from my assistant?">
    No. A change your assistant makes is recorded under your name in SkillsDB, exactly as if you had made it yourself.
  </Accordion>
